ABOUT OUR SPEECH THERAPISTS
NANCY BARBER
Nancy completed her undergraduate degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2006 and she completed her Masters in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2015. She is currently in her third year of her PhD.
Nancy began working as a speech-language pathologist and audiologist by doing her community service year in the small town of Eshowe, KZN. There a love for working with people, especially adults with speech, language and swallowing difficulties, was forged. Subsequently, she has worked in acute hospital settings as well as outpatient rehab centres in Johannesburg. She also has worked with OTs ensuring successful return to work after a stroke or a head injury.

Nancy has also studied further, expanding her skills in adult swallowing difficulties and voice disorders. She also offers interdisciplinary swallowing assessments with local ENTs using flexible endoscopy.
Nancy has been a certified LSVT Loud Clinician since 2014, and she has enjoyed seeing many people with Parkinson's Disease benefit tremendously from this therapy technique.

Nancy has run courses training speech-language therapists on how to provide therapy for persons with swallowing disorders, voice disorders and cognitive-communication disorders. She frequently presents at local and international conferences. She is also often a guest speaker at webinars and training sessions.

MARINA DE LIRA DE GOUVEIA
We have welcomed Marina, a speech-language therapist, to the practice from 1 October 2023.
Marina completed her undergraduate degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2019.
Marina began working as a speech-language pathologist and audiologist by doing her community service year at Pholosong Hospital, where she stayed for another 1,5 years. Subsequently, she has worked closely with an interdisciplinary team in the adult rehab setting.
Marina has an interest in complex swallowing and communication conditions and enjoys making therapy functional and individualised to each patient. She has done various courses to better understand her patients and their needs.

Nancy and Marina commit to going on a journey with their patients, whether it is the journey of learning to swallow or communicate again, the journey of dealing with head and neck cancer, the journey of returning to being able to use their voice or returning to a high quality of life after a stroke or head injury.
